Home for the Holidays: A Parent's Guide to Welcoming Your College Student Back
As the holiday season approaches, many families are preparing to welcome their college student home, some for the first time since move-in day.
While the reunion is often joyful, it can also bring a mix of emotions and adjustments. Here are a few tips to help make the transition smooth and meaningful for everyone. The tips are also available in a printable PDF.
Be Patient & Flexible
Your student has likely developed new routines and habits. Before they arrive, have a respectful conversation about curfews, family obligations, chores. This helps avoid misunderstandings and sets the tone for a positive visit.
Stock Up On Favorites
Ask your student what meals or treats they’ve missed while away. Cooking a favorite dish or having their go-to snacks on hand is a simple way to show love and care.
Respect Their Independence
College life fosters independence. While it’s tempting to return to old routines, try to honor the autonomy they’ve developed. Give them space to rest, recharge and reconnect with friends.
Plan Family Time Thoughtfully
Instead of filling the calendar, choose a few meaningful activities, such as baking together, watching a favorite movie, or volunteering. Quality time often matters more than quantity.
Offer Support, Not Surveillance
If your student seems tired or withdrawn, it might be due to finals or the adjustment of being home again. Offer support and a listening ear, but avoid pressing too hard. Sometimes, just being present is enough.
Celebrate The Moment
Ask about their experiences, challenges and accomplishments and enjoy the time together. Take photos, share stories, and enjoy the little things while they’re home.
