Background

Professor Juhee Park has a background in biology with a focus on molecular biology and protein biochemistry. She discovered her interest in biological sciences as an undergraduate student and is thrilled to work with the students at Rivier University to demonstrate how structure and function of macromolecules can reveal so much information about essential biological processes.

As an undergraduate student, Dr. Park earned a joint BS/MS degree in Biochemistry from Brandeis University. As part of this program, she completed and defended an MS research thesis investigating the disease mechanism of a cardiac arrhythmia-associated mutation on an ion channel protein. Dr. Park followed up on her interest in biomedical research, especially for better understanding of dysregulated proteins, during her doctoral studies.

Dr. Park earned her PhD in Biochemistry from the Department of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research focused on targeted protein degradation in bacteria, and in particular, characterizing the mechanism of the energy-dependent protease FtsH in E. coli. Her work uncovered a novel mechanism for how proteins may be degraded by this membrane-associated protease. During this time, Dr. Park also discovered her passion for teaching. She received the Biology Department Award for Excellence in Teaching for her work as a teaching assistant, and she also completed the Kaufman Teaching Certificate Program to learn more about evidence-based teaching techniques.

After a brief postdoctoral training period in California, Dr. Park returned to the East Coast to follow her passion in higher education. She has taught biology in classrooms and laboratories at Tufts University, North Shore Community College, and in the adult career training program at the Cambridge nonprofit, Just A Start. Dr. Park applies her expertise in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and biotechnology to provide meaningful experiences to help her students make real-life connections and learn biology.
