The Art Gallery at Rivier University Presents “Images from a Long View of the Earth”

Rivier University is hosting an exhibition and artist’s reception for Professor Emeritus Ronnie McClure.

His recent works are on display in a collection titled “Images from a Long View of the Earth.” The exhibition is free and open to the public now through February 28. The public is also invited to a reception for the artist on Thursday, February 14 from 5–7 p.m. at The Art Gallery.

“In my work, I repeatedly probe the various ways we human beings understand our relationship to nature,” says McClure, who is recognized for his long-time explorations of digital image-making.

The collection on exhibition begins with aerial photographs of the American landscape taken through interpretive processes that include digital drawing, painting, and color-manipulation. The results are semi-abstract interactions of line, shape, texture, and color, which he prints digitally on high-grade rag paper. With a preference for larger canvases, certain pieces exceed five feet in width and three feet in height.

“I think of Ronnie McClure as one who ‘paints’ photographic materials into a kind of stillness, that is, into a certain reflective repose,” shares Sister Theresa Couture, Director of The Art Gallery. “Somewhat paradoxically, he creates compellingly dynamic and beautiful episodes of repose that are technically seamless, aesthetically innovative, and contemplatively passionate.”

McClure’s work has been widely exhibited, most recently at the Sony Square Gallery in New York City, and it is included in several collections, among them the Denver Art Museum in Colorado and the Museum of Biblical Art in Texas.
