Global Engagement

Pre-Departure Information

  • Money: Prepare to take enough local currency to get you through the first couple of days. You can either exchange money before you leave the U.S., or get similar rates of exchange in the airport when you arrive. ATM cards, credit cards, and traveler's cheques are preferable. Do not bring all your credit cards; just bring the one you will be using. Remember to make a photocopy of them (front and back), and keep it separate from the card.
Important Reminder: Email yourself copies of your credit cards, ATM cards, credit cards, and traveler's cheques. Leave copies with, or email copies of each to your family.
  • Computers: Make sure that you have the necessary converters or adaptors to plug into foreign outlets. Also make sure that your computer is insured before you leave the U.S. (see notes about personal property insurance). Visit http://www.voltageconverters.com/voltageguide.htm for foreign voltage information.
  • Smart Phones: There are a variety of ways to communicate to your family and friends in the USA by downloading a couple of popular mobile phones applications such as Tango, Viber and even Google voice. Face time and Skype is another popular way to stay connected. This could certainly help you save a lot of money and it is very convenient. In addition, you can use services number available through AT and T, MCI, and Sprint or another calling service that will allow you to connect directly to a US operator.
