Circles of Wonder | Christmas Crèche Figures from Around the World

November 12, 2018 at December 13, 2018

Free

A collection of contemporary folk expressions of the birth of Christ, this exhibition demonstrates something of how culture and religion can and do influence and enrich each other. It suggests psychological and sociological implications of the Christmas story, calls attention to visual dimensions of indigenous cultures, and reveals one way by which Christianity has stood in wonder of the humble birth of an Incarnate God.

Recreating the scene of Christ’s birth is widely considered one of the most tender and enduring Christmas traditions. With origins in the Middle Ages, it came to bloom as popular culture in the 17th and 18th centuries, thanks to missionary efforts, artistic ingenuity, and a pervading sense of the sacred. Originally rooted in three centers–Naples, Italy; the Provence region of France; and southern Germany and Austria– nativity sets, with the Christ child encircled by Biblical and indigenous characters, have sparked imagination throughout the world.
