Role of the LECC Director
The Director works with families to provide optimal programming to meet the needs of their children. The Director completes assessment of curriculum, classroom environment, and teacher disposition. The Director also keeps abreast of new developments in early childhood education and related teacher education methodologies, management, administration, and grant-funding opportunities.
Since the LECC serves as a laboratory school to Rivier University’s Early Childhood Education majors, the Director works in coordination with Riv’s Director of graduate and undergraduate Early Childhood Education program regarding the supervision of practicum students, as well as LECC programming.
Role of the Classroom Teachers
The competence and motivation of our teachers is paramount. Each early childhood classroom is staffed by a teaching team. Because the LECC also serves as a teacher training program for Rivier University, cooperating teachers are required to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, plus at least three years of teaching experience. Most of our cooperating teachers hold master’s degrees and several years of teaching experience. Our teachers aim to stimulate and encourage children’s development through questioning, listening, and participation in the children’s activities. The sensitive balance between a child’s need to explore independently and an adult’s opportunity to extend learning is recognized, and quality interactions are sought.
Working as a team, our teachers strive to meet the individual needs of each child and stay in continuous communication with one another and with parents to promote and monitor each child’s development.
Role of LECC Families
Parental involvement is strongly encouraged. It communicates the importance of school to children, and maintains open lines of communication between parents and teachers. We have an open door policy and welcome your participation in the classrooms. We appreciate you sharing your time, talents or hobbies.
Your feedback is expected and important for the continuous development of our program and its practices. Parental feedback is obtained through personal conversations, surveys, emails and phone calls. A more formal annual survey is distributed so feedback can be recorded, summarized, and shared with families and teachers. If parents have questions or comments, they are encouraged to first speak with their child’s classroom teachers and then with the Director.
We request that parents refrain from lengthy discussions with teachers during class hours and at pick-up/drop-off times. Also, in keeping with our commitment to respecting children and promoting their self-worth, we ask that negative comments and sensitive topics be reserved for a private conference.
Role of the LECC Parent/Teacher Organization
The Parent/Teacher Organization works to plan events for families. Families networking with one another is of great value to our program and to the children. The LECC community is strong because family connections are very personal and supportive. It is our hope that the relationships you create as a member of the LECC family are ones that will last a lifetime! The benefit of parental participation in the PTO allows us to have extra-curricular activities such as music and creative movement without passing the cost on to our families. The PTO helps to support such programs with funds raised throughout the school year.
Role of Operations Manager
The Operations Manager performs a variety of administrative and clerical tasks and works closely with the Director. The Operations Manager is often the first face families see when entering the LECC.
Role of the School Nurse
The School Nurse provides nursing care for children with both acute and chronic medical conditions. The School Nurse provides staff training to ensure that children with chronic medical conditions such as food allergies, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy are well cared for. She is involved with the Early Childhood Education Program in orienting the students in LECC health and safety policies, provides outreach to the community, and works with the Director to take advantage of grant funding opportunities.
Role of the Director of the Early Childhood Education Program
The Director of the graduate and undergraduate Early Childhood Education (EDE) programs at Rivier University works in professional collaboration with the Director of the LECC to ensure programming that mentors the early childhood education student teachers. The ECE Director assists in assessing curriculum, classroom environments, and teacher disposition.
Role of the College Student – Educational Field Experience
Students from the Rivier University Education Division observe and work with children under the supervision of cooperating and mentor teachers as they gain practical field experience. Infant and toddler classes have students assigned during the second semester on Tuesday mornings. Preschool and kindergarten classes have students assigned during both the first and second semesters on Thursday mornings. While in the classroom, students have opportunities to develop and implement activities in accordance with the LECC’s philosophy. Families will be informed in writing prior to their child’s participation in any projects differing from our standard program or practicum experiences.
