Dr. McIlwain is the founder of the Rivier University Summer Reading Program, a cooperative effort with the Nashua School District to bring literacy immersion and enrichment to struggling elementary students through the expertise of graduate students in the University M.Ed. Reading & Writing program. She is also a board member of Growth Through Learning, a non-proft organization supporting secondary education of girls and young women in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Dr. McIlwain is currently collaborating on an introductory level textbook for students aspiring to a career in education.
