Renumbering Footnotes in Chapters of a Book

If you are writing a book and have several chapters or sections, you must renumber the footnotes to start at the number 1 for each chapter or section.

Step One: At the end of the chapter
Place the cursor after the last footnote in the chapter
Click Page Layout tab / Pages Setup group / Breaks

The following dialog box will display



Select Next Page

After you have inserted the Next Page break SAVE the document

Step Two: To restart the numbering in the new chapter
Place the cursor where you want to insert your first footnote
Click References tab / Go to Footnotes group and click Blue arrow box

The following dialog box will open

At the start at number, make sure you have 1
Numbering: Restart each section
Apply changes to This section / Insert
The footnote number should be 1

Repeat Steps One and Two for each chapter.

When the different chapters are merged into a single document, the chapter footnotes will all begin with no. 1.
