Sorting Records Using Like

To return all students whose last names begin with the same letter, use the parameter expression

Like [Enter the first letter of the last name]*

Open the database in Table View
Highlight the column you want to sort

Click the Filter by Form or the Advanced Filter

The following screen will display
Type
Like d* (will retrieve all companies beginning with the letter d)

Click the Apply Filter icon

Access returns only those records whose entry in the Company Name field begins with the letter d.

There are more sophisticated ways to retrieve Last Name fields:

Like "Kelly" : retrieves all records with the last name Kelly

Like "[A-C]*" : retrieves all records with the last name A, B, and C

Like "[A-C,F]*" : retrieves all records with the last name A, B, C, and F

Like "[A-C,L-N]*" : retrieves all records with the last name A, B, C and L, M, N

Like "[!A-L]*" : retrieves all records outside of A-L; therefore retrieves from M through Z

Like "S[A-E]*" : retrieves all records that begin with SA, SB, SC, SD, SE

Like "S[A-E,T-V]*" : retrieves all records that begin with SA, SB, SC, SD, SE and ST, SU, SV
