SERVICE LEARNING

service learningService learning intergrates active, socially significant service into the education experience. It offers students meaningful, community-based, experiential learning by adding human depth to the theories learned in the classroom.

At Rivier College, service learning reflects our commitment to action and social justice; and it leads to authentic knowledge and union with God, neighbor, and the community.

Service Learning Requirement
Students in the School of Undergraduate Studies are required to earn one credit in service learning prior to graduation. It is recommended that students enroll in a service learning course during their sophomore or junior year.

A Sampling of Completed Service Learning Projects
Rivier students have worked with more than 90 community partners in recent years.

  • Math students created an innovative after-school program at Girls, Inc.
  • An education major supported homeless families by organizaing children's activities at the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter.
  • Students in the social work program assisted The Youth Council to generate awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month by organizing a rally at City Hall, making ribbons, producing and distributing literature, and contacting the community for support.
  • Studio art majors oversaw the painting of a 150-foot mural in downtown Nashua, sponsored by The Mayor's Task Force on Youth, to support the 17th Annual National Youth Service Day.
  • A communications major tutored developmentally disabled adults through a collaboration with the Plus Company Literacy Project.
  • Honors students supported a Bosnian refugee family settling in Nashua through collaboration with Campus Ministry and Catholic Charities.
