Hometown: E. Providence, R.I.
A volleyball player in high school, Jessica Amaral ’14 was looking for a college where she could continue playing the sport she loved. She had known about Rivier College since childhood because her babysitters were members of the College’s volleyball team. She knew she had to come when she visited as a Raider recruit. “Once I came for that visit, I fell in love with the College,” she says.
Amaral is a two-sport athlete, playing on the volleyball team as a defensive specialist and on the lacrosse team as a midfielder. She says participation in team sports has made her a part of the campus community. “Playing sports has really made me connect with staff and other athletes,” she says. “It introduced me to the friends I have now.”
Her commitment to athletics led her to a chance to volunteer as a personal trainer for two women in the Rivier Institute for Senior Education (RISE). Although she had never done any personal training, she certainly had enough knowledge about personal fitness and exercise equipment to effectively teach her RISE students. Amaral assessed their personal fitness goals and showed them appropriate workouts using the new equipment at the Muldoon Health and Fitness Center. “The experience was rewarding because I was able to build a relationship with people I had never met before and show them how they can exercise,” Amaral says.
A business marketing major and communications minor, she praises her professors for their engaging teaching style and how they use a lot of hands-on activities in their classes to ensure student learning. Amaral notes how instructors are dedicated to their students’ success. “They want you to learn the material so you can be successful.” When Amaral graduates from Rivier, she hopes to own her own business or have a management role within an organization.
