HOW TO BEGIN YOUR ONLINE OR HYBRID

Congratulations on your decision to enroll in an online or hybrid course at Rivier University. Our online and hybrid courses offer the same high-quality instruction as our face-to-face courses. Online courses offer the convenience of taking a course from any location with internet access without scheduled weekly meetings. Hybrid courses incorporate both face-to-face classroom instruction and online learning. Both online and hybrid courses utilize Canvas, a state-of-the-art course management system for completing assignments and communicating with instructor and classmates.
Even though your online course does not meet on campus each week, it will have a specific start and end date (listed on the course schedule). Instructors and students are not required to be online at the same time, unless the instructor schedules a group chat during a specified time period. Instructors will be available for optional online office hours each week. Hybrid courses will meet on campus during the days/times specified on your course schedule and will utilize Canvas for communication outside of the classroom.
Follow these simple steps to begin your online or hybrid experience at Rivier University.
1. Register for an online or hybrid course.(If you’ve already registered for your course, proceed to step 2)
- Visit http://www.rivier.edu/registrar to browse our course schedules and to download a registration form. Online and hybrid courses are designated in the last column of the schedule.
- Mail in your completed registration form to: Office of the Registrar, 420 South Main Street, Nashua, NH 03060
- You may also fax in your registration to the Office of the Registrar at: (603) 897-8811
- Payment arrangements are made with the Business Office. Visit http://www.rivier.edu/businessoffice for information on payment plans or contact the Business Office at (603) 897-8214, for details about deferred payment options. To be considered an officially registered student, payment arrangements must be made by the start date of the class.
2. Sign up for a Rivier University Computer Account.
All students at Rivier must have a university computer account, so it is recommended that you complete this step as soon as possible after registering for your course and receiving a confirmation from the Registrar’s Office. Creation of the account will provide you with a university email address, as well as a Canvas account. You will need both a Rivier email address and a Canvas account to begin your online or hybrid course. Your instructor will communicate with you via your Rivier University email address, so it is recommended that you check your account frequently.
Click here to request a university computer account. Follow the instructions to register for your account. The form will ask for your Student Identification number. This number is located on the course confirmation you received from the Registrar’s Office. You may also sign up for an account in person by visiting the IT Services Coordinator at the Academic Computing Center in Sylvia Trottier Hall.
Once your computer user account is set up, your e-mail name will be the same as your network username. For example: firstname.lastname@example.org, where in most cases username is the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name. Example: William Brown’s email address would be email@example.com. To log-in to your Rivier University email, simply click on the EMAIL link on the home page of our website or on the top of any page within the site.
3. Log-in to Canvas and prepare for the start of your class
As soon as you receive confirmation that your Rivier computer account has been created, log-in to Canvas to confirm that your class is listed in the MY COURSES section. Click on the CANVAS link on the top of the Rivier homepage or visit https://rivier.instructure.com. (Note: www. is not included in this address.) Click on the LOG-IN button and you will be prompted to enter your username and password. When you log-in for the first time, you will be prompted to change your password from the default password issued when your account was created.
Your instructor will add you to Canvas for the course in which you enrolled. Once the instructor adds you to the course, your online or hybrid course will be listed under the MY COURSES section. There you will find a course syllabus, announcements from your instructor, course documents, and more. A welcome message will be posted from your instructor with further instructions about your course.
Note: If your online or hybrid course is not listed under MY COURSES, notify your instructor immediately. In most instances, your instructor’s email address is the first letter of their first name, followed by their last name. For example, William Brown’s email address would be firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also click on DIRECTORY at the top of the Rivier web site for our online directory of faculty and staff members.
Download necessary plug-ins: You should prepare for the start of your class by making sure your computer is equipped with the necessary plug-ins to take advantage of all of the Canvas features. Plug-ins can be downloaded at no charge from our Information Technology web page at http://www.rivier.edu/it. Available plug-ins are listed in the right column of this page.
