Fresh Check Day events on October 7 support student wellness

Rivier University hosted Fresh Check Day on Wednesday, October 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fresh Check Day is a concept created by The Jordan Matthew Porco Memorial Foundation and is designed to bring the campus community together to “check in” on the mental health and wellness of college students. Similar events are being held at colleges throughout the United States, and Rivier is one of two participating institutions in New Hampshire.

Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Office of Student Life and Housing, and the Counseling and Wellness Center, in collaboration with the Jordan Matthew Porco Memorial Foundation, the event was free and open to the public. During the event, the Dion Center was transformed into an expo-like atmosphere with interactive exhibits, food, prizes, and giveaways.

The booths featured peer-to-peer messaging in a positive, community-focused setting. “We anticipated that this fun event would encourage a high participation rate for our students and raise awareness of mental health concerns and resources,” says Vice President for Student Affairs Kurt Stimeling.

“I participated in a Fresh Check Day two years ago and saw how unique and engaging it was,” says coordinator for the event Resident Director Natalia Guisao. “My job is to make sure our resident students are safe and learning outside of the classroom, as well as supporting what they learn in the classroom. This event opens an important line of communication with our students regarding good mental health, which can help them learn to advocate for themselves and other students.”

Rivier’s dining partner Sodexo provided refreshments. For more information, visit the event website at www.freshcheckday.com.
