Inaugural Greeting on behalf of the Rivier College Faculty

Dr. Paula Williams
Chairperson, Rivier College Faculty Senate

Paula WilliamsGood afternoon!  It is an honor and a pleasure to congratulate you, Sister Paula Marie Buley, on this historical and joyous occasion of your inauguration.  Your abundant energy has already been felt across this beautiful campus.  Your welcoming smile has warmed the hearts of all who have had the pleasure of speaking with you.  On behalf of the Faculty Senate and the diversely talented Faculty at Rivier College, I welcome you and look forward to working with you as we live the mission of 'transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.'

We, the faculty of Rivier College, are a community of teachers and scholars, alive, vibrant and challenging as life itself.  We the faculty view our role as teachers and educators as both a profession and a vocation. As teachers and scholars, we engage students in research, write books, fulfill leadership roles, and provide inspiration both to the greater Nashua community and at the national level; we foster a love and appreciation of the arts, educate the future teachers and ensure that they are comfortable in the use of the latest technologies. Our accomplished and diverse faculty present papers at international conferences around the globe.  We provide wellness initiatives to our own Rivier community as well as to the underserved and marginalized in the greater community; we guide students in service learning projects, mentor students to achieve well beyond their hopes and dreams, and welcome back alumni who thank us for our role in their success.  We are poised to meet the many complex challenges facing higher education today.  In the true spirit of Sister Madeleine of Jesus, we will continue Marie Rivier’s legacy of boundless energy and faith as we courageously persevere toward the goal, regardless of the challenges.

In the finest tradition of Rivier College, we the faculty wish you discernment, wisdom, and the plentitude of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  We look forward to collaborating with you on initiatives that will require our insight, creativity, and support.  In the words of Mother Theresa of Calcutta, this is our wish for you as you begin your life as President of Rivier College:

"Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.

Life is beauty, admire it.

Life is a dream, realize it.

Life is a challenge, meet it.

Life is a duty, complete it.

Life is a game, play it.

Life is a promise, fulfill it.

Life is a song, sing it.

Life is a struggle, accept it.

Life is an adventure, dare it.

We already know that, in many ways, you already meet life in this way, and we, the faculty of Rivier College, are prepared to join you in the adventure.
