Teaching Trips

Rivier University offers a variety of teaching trips each academic year. Teaching trips are one to three credit courses taught by Rivier faculty at a location outside of the United States. Teaching trips are partnerships between the OGE and Academic Departments with defined expectations for both parties. Departments are encouraged to design global teaching and learning experiences that are tailored to their students’ needs and academic programs.

Biology Field Experience – United States Virgin Islands

Follow the adventures of our biology students during their spring break visit, March 2-9, 2013, “Rivier University visits St. John USVI” blog!

A three credit course taught by Dr. Joel Stake in partnership with the University of the Virgin Islands. The course will be intense, covering three credits in eight days. Students will be conducting research on live coral through hands on experiences.

Students will experience first-hand the cultural and natural beauty of the United States Virgin Islands. They will explore surrounding coral reefs, mangroves, and the spectacular 7,000 plus acre Virgin Islands National Park that encompasses more than half of the island of St. John. Students will learn about the connectivity and balance between human land use and the rich terrestrial and coastal habitats found on the islands. Threats to these habitats and ongoing efforts to mitigate these threats will be discussed. Biological field techniques will be taught and used to conduct diversity surveys for selected habitats on the islands. In addition to gaining an appreciation for the natural beauty of the US Virgin Islands, students will visit historic sites pre-dating the arrival of Columbus to the New World, providing a cultural framework for the modern identity of this U.S. territory.
