Goal: To ease the entry of graduate and undergraduate international students by providing timely and ongoing advising in matters of personal, social, cultural, and immigration concerns. To provide a highly personal approach helps F-1 students make successful transitions into the Rivier community.
Dey Barriga, Senior Associate for OGE/ International Student Advisor (SA/ISA), provides comprehensive immigration advising pertaining to F-1 students and assistance with matters such as housing, social security numbers, personal issues, drivers’ licenses, cultural adjustment, employment, filing income tax, and traveling outside the United States as well as re-entry. Hillary Sabbagh, Coordinator for Global Engagement, assists in providing pre-arrival information, preparing SSN and DMV letters and assists the SA/ISA in coordinating cultural programming. The SA/ISA provides immigration updates and reminders to international students every semester. An electronic newsletter with updates on recent immigration rules and regulations is sent to all F1 students every semester to make sure the students are aware of their esponsibilities in maintaining their legal status..
The Office of Global Engagement promotes cultural awareness and global engagement on campus. Cultural programs such as Diwali, Holi and Chinese New Year are some of the many exciting events on campus. The office also encourages students to build relationship within the community by way of participating on the Global Friendship Mentoring program and F-1 Circle: What’s Up!. The Indian Student Association of Rivier University (ISARU), is an active on campus student association which celebrates Indian cultural traditions. Rivier University also celebrates the Moon Festival and the Chinese New Year under the leadership of the Rivier University Chinese Student Association (RUCSA).
