Fee Increases on Federal Direct Loans Begin Summer 2013

Loan origination fees for Stafford and PLUS Loans to increase this summer due to recent federal sequestration.

Automatic federal budget cuts, known as a “sequestration,” are now in effect due to Congress failure to enact legislation prior to March 1, 2013 to reduce the federal deficit.

As a result of the sequestration, loan fees for Federal Direct Loans will increase beginning with the 2013 Summer Sessions.

The loan fees for Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans will increase from 1.0 to 1.051 percent. Parent and Graduate PLUS Loan fees will increase and from 4.0 to 4.204 percent. See the charts below for examples of origination fee increases.
