Biographical Sketch

 

HERMAN T. TAVANI, PHD, is Professor of Philosophy at Rivier College and President of the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology (INSEIT).  He has written or edited five books on social and ethical aspects of information technology, including Ethics and Technology (Wiley) which is now in a third edition.  His scholarly papers have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, as well as in books and encyclopedias.  Professor Tavani has presented at institutions in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Japan, as well as at colleges and universities throughout the United States.  He has chaired or co-chaired regional, national, and international conferences, and has served on the editorial boards of six academic journals/periodicals; currently, he is Book Review Editor for the journal Ethics and Information Technology.

 

Dr. Tavani has held appointments as a visiting lecturer at Boston College, and as a visiting scholar at Dartmouth College and the Harvard School of Public Health.  An active member of several professional associations, Tavani is a past president of the Northern New England Philosophical Association (NNEPA) and served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Association for Computing’s Special Interest Group on Computers and Society (ACM SIGCAS).  He received the 2008 ACM SIGCAS Outstanding Service Award for his contributions to SIGCAS and its quarterly publication, Computers and Society, and received the Catholic Library Association’s 2004 John Brubaker Memorial Award for his scholarly writing in Catholic Library World. 

 

Professor Tavani has been honored in Who's Who Among America's Teachers on multiple occasions for “making a difference as a college teacher.”  Before he became a full-time professor, Tavani worked in the computer industry as a software technical writer and writing supervisor.  He resides in Nashua, NH with his wife, Joanne, and their daughter, Regina.
