Biographical Sketch
HERMAN T. TAVANI, PHD, is Professor of Philosophy at
An active member of several professional associations,
Professor Tavani recently served as President of the Northern New England
Philosophical Association (NNEPA), Co-Executive Director of INSEIT, and
Secretary/Treasurer of the Association for Computing’s Special Interest Group
on Computers and Society (ACM SIGCAS).
He has chaired or co-chaired numerous conferences in applied ethics and
is currently Co-Chair of the Eighth International Conference on Computer Ethics
– Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE 2009), which will be held at the Ionian
University, Corfu, Greece in June 2009.
He has also served on the editorial boards of several journals and is
currently Book Review Editor for Ethics and Information Technology.
Professor Tavani recently received the 2008 ACM SIGCAS Outstanding Service Award, in
recognition of his leadership role in SIGCAS and his contributions to the ACM
quarterly publication Computers and
Society. In 2004, he received the Catholic Library Association’s John Brubaker Memorial Award for his
scholarly writing in the journal Catholic
Library World. He has been honored
in Who's Who Among America's Teachers on multiple occasions, including
2004 and 2005, for “making a
difference as a college teacher.”
Before becoming a full-time professor, Tavani worked
in the computer industry as a software technical writer and writing
supervisor. He resides in
