ANSWERS

What is the cost for the extended-day program option?
The cost of the extended-day program is $599, and covers two meals on campus (lunch and dinner) and program activities from 8:45 AM to 8:00 PM. You will miss the recreational activities scheduled after 8 PM.

Can I receive high-school credits for the SICS course?
SICS program offers a three-credit college-level undergraduate course in computer science. The course has 39 contact hours and is taught by full-time faculty. We recommend that you discuss with your guidance counselor about receiving credit for a corresponding high-school course.

What are the specifics of the Friday's lab class?
The class following orientation is for the purpose of having ourselves, students and faculty, introduced to each other. Students will also check out their computer accounts. No curricular content  is missed by not attending the Friday lab class.

Is commuting an option for students who live nearby?
Yes, it is. The program has two options: residential and extended-day. The difference between the two options is that extended-day program participants do not live on campus.

Whom do I contact if I need assistance outside curricular activities?
Administrative and residential staff members are available 24 hours a day. You and your parents will get to know them during the orientation session from 6:00 to 6:30 PM on Friday, June 25. Resident assistants stay in the dorm with you and accompany you to all activities. They are qualified to handle emergency situations and address personal issues you might have.

Can I attend church service on Sunday morning?
Yes. You have to inform your instructors about missing part of the  morning session. They will assist you with completing the missed work.

What do I bring in the dorm?
No need to bring any bedding items. A rough (also very short) list would have:

towels and toiletries, such as tooth paste, shampoo, etc.

clothing

personal items, such as a CD player or  books.

You might choose to bring your computer, desktop or laptop. In that case, make sure that the machine runs Windows 2000 or NT or XP and has the most recent critical security updates from Microsoft web site, and an antivirus program. It should have a network card installed. Also, don't forget the network and power cables.

Do I bring a binder?
Yes, a binder is useful. Although we'll generate most of the work electronically, printed copies of handouts, notes, etc. might be circulated. The binder is also a neat place to have your own copies of resources you might find useful.

Can I choose my roommate?
Yes, you can choose your roommate. If you have a preference and an agreement from your roommate, please let us know.

Is there a "what to bring list"?
There is just a sketch of a "what to bring list". No linen is needed. Bring whatever you think you need if you would have free time in the dorm. A binder for the class. A computer in the room.

How secure are the dorms?
The dorms are very secure. The large majority of Rivier students have their computers (desktops or laptops) in the dorm and I don't know of any theft in the past 4 years I have been here.

Can snacks be bought in between feeding times?
There are several vending machines on campus. Hayward's Ice Cream (see http://www.haywardsicecream-nh.com/Nashua.htm - they have sandwiches, hot dogs, etc.) is across the street. However, trips to Hayward's must be planned and only under the camp counselors' escort. There is a full-size refrigerator in the dorm for general use.
