 Job search techniques for summer jobs are the same as those for permanent jobs. You'll find helpful information about conducting a thorough job search, as well as writing resumes and cover letters through our Pursuit of Employment web page of Job Search Resources.

In addition, there are many library resources that list jobs and employer information for entry-level positions.  Summer job and internship opportunities can also be found through the CDC's Internship Listings and related Internet Resources for Gaining Hands-On Experience in the workplace.

 Summer Job Search Timetable

Fall Semester

• View cover letter and job search videos offered by the Career Development Center
• Prepare your resume
• Attend job fairs and career symposiums to make employer contacts and conduct informational interviews
• Research employers; set up informational interviews during your breaks
• Explore externship opportunities for winter break.
• Start applying for summer opportunities

• Research local employers while home during the break
• Network with family, friends, relatives, former teachers and coaches - get the word out that you are looking for summer opportunities
• Consider using your academic year Work-Study to help you find a job with an eligible employer over Winter Break

• Continue to check the job listings on JobTrak, preferably twice a week
•  Apply for summer jobs
• Schedule interviews over spring break
• Follow up applications with phone calls, and follow up interviews with thank you letters
• If eligible, apply for summer Federal Work-Study through the Financial Aid Office (start this process in February)

Use the membership lists of your local chamber of Commerce...

Apply for jobs through state and temporary employment agencies ...

Check for job openings with your local city hall, social service agencies, and other local government agencies.

Be an entrepreneur... consider starting your own creative business.

Check for job listings at other colleges and universities; on bulletin boards; in post offices and libraries; and at industrial sites.

Newspapers can be very useful...use the help wanted ads, but also scan the advertisements and articles for new businesses, construction, and programs that you could contact for job opportunities.

The Yellow Pages in phone books provide a handy reference of potential employers.

When an employer doesn't offer an internship program -- offer to help establish one on a trial basis. Whether or not you get paid for the internship you gain valuable experience and exposure and you'll have the opportunity to network and make new cont acts for future references and jobs.
