Sample School Counselor Achievement Statements
Individual Counseling
- Counseled students grades 5 through 8 utilizing client
centered and cognitive/behavioral frameworks on a variety of issues including
personal/social skills, anger management, friendship skills, dispute
resolution, family concerns, academic progress, drug and/or alcohol abuse, and
behavioral concerns.
- Counseled high school students regarding the career
planning process; provided individualized assistance with self-assessment
results from the Self-Directed Search personality and interest inventory;
assisted with career exploration using the computer program, Choices, for
developing career life plans.
Group Counseling
- Led student groups in career exploration activities, the
college planning process, grief crisis management, women’s self-esteem issues,
divorce, and study skills for school success.
- Planned, organized, and facilitated a 6 week study
skills group of 8 tenth grade students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who
were at risk of failing one or more classes; created interactive activities
and provided tips to improve study habits, addressing individual needs and
barriers to success; four of the eight students improved overall grades during
the final semester of school
Classroom Guidance
- Taught and co-taught more than 25 guidance lessons in
grades K-6 on developmental issues such as friendship skills, using I-Care
language, and responsibility; developed a three lesson guidance program for
K-2nd grades on appropriate and inappropriate affection and
touching.
- Taught classroom guidance lessons on high-school course
selections, graduation requirements, the college application process, and
post-secondary planning.
Program Management
- Co-developed both parent and teacher versions of a
monthly Values Education Newsletter; designed an annual counseling department
newsletter highlighting its philosophy, programs and services.
- Developed and coordinated publishing of the school’s
first ever Freshman Survival Guide.
- Assisted with “teaming” transition and the development
of a master schedule.
- Trained peer mediators and facilitated junior high peer
mediation program.
- Participated in organizing Sophomore Career Day
activities, an off-campus effort to connect students with local business
people, colleges, training schools, and the military.
- Designed a booklet of summer career and pre-college
enrichment opportunities for students.
Referrals
- Assessed students’ emotional states in response to a
fatal act of violence involving female students; offered optional coping
strategies, positive ways to express grief, and made necessary referrals to
outside agencies
- Referred abuse cases to Child Protective Services for
investigation
- Followed state-mandated reporting and referral
procedures for a 17-year old male student contemplating suicide.
Appraisal
- Developed a survey for ninth graders to assess their
concerns about high school adjustment and expectations, using results to plan
focus groups that targeted student needs.
- Conducted pre and post intervention evaluations of the
After School Sports program to determine the efficacy of the program.
Extra Curricular Activities
- Developed and implemented the After School Sports
program to enhance student success through active tutoring and cooperative
sports.
