-
First Year Assessments.
Entering
freshmen and transfer students participate in entrance examinations
to determine basic skills in writing and mathematics. Performance on
these assessments is used to aid in the selection of English and
mathematics courses.
-
The Writing Sample.
All
freshmen and most transfer students are required to submit the
writing sample. The writing sample is administered as part of the
orientation process and is evaluated by faculty from the Department
of English. The writing sample is used as an instructional
assessment tool and is a prerequisite for ENG 120 Composition in
Context I. Should the results indicate that a student would benefit
from ENG 102 Introduction to Writing II as a prerequisite for the
core curriculum writing course, ENG 102 will be accepted as an
elective toward graduation.
-
The Math Assessment. The
math assessment test is given to al incoming students before
their freshmen year. The test evaluates to what extent students have
mastered basic algebra skills. Students who answer fewer than 20 of
the 35 questions correctly will need to take MA 100, an algebra
review course, before enrolling in the First Year Studies
mathematics course.
-
College Assessments.
Prior to the end of each semester, students are asked to complete
course evaluations. These are confidential evaluations that provide
professors with the students' viewpoints regarding the course
content, objectives, grading practices, teaching methods, and other
important information that professors use to improve their
instructional practices.
-
Career Development
Center Survey. After graduation, Rivier graduates are
asked to complete a Placement Survey. The survey gathers information
from graduates regarding their academic preparation, internship
involvement, and experience with Career Development. The information
is used to evaluate the College's efforts in providing quality
academic and career development services to future Rivier students.

- Departmental Assessments.
Departmental assessments at Rivier evaluate students in a variety of
ways. In each course students fulfill the requirements as stated in
course outlines that are submitted by professors at the beginning of
every semester. Students are assessed by means of closed and open
book examinations, performance assessments, exhibitions, research
and other papers, and oral presentations. Assessments will vary with
the nature of the coursework and the objectives of the course. Some
departments will require capstone experiences that are culminating
experiences designed to integrate the major. Other departments
require internships as the culminating experiences.
- The Praxis. Students who
major in Education will take the Praxis Exam in the fall of the sophomore
year. The Praxis is a nationally normed basic literacy test in
reading, writing, and mathematics and is required for teacher
certification in New Hampshire. Students must receive a passing
grade on the Praxis in order to continue their major in the
educational department.
- The NCLEX. Students
majoring in Nursing take standardized examinations at the end of
most nursing courses. After completing academic requirements,
students are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure
Examination to qualify for licensure as Registered Nurses.
- The Academic Profile. In the
fall semester of the first year and again in the fall/spring of the
fourth year, students are required to take the Academic Profile. The
Academic Profile (AP) is a nationally standardized, 40-minute,
multiple-choice test of general college-level skills in reading,
writing, critical thinking, and using mathematical data. The AP
helps the College to evaluate how well programs are preparing
students in the areas tested, and to monitor the effectiveness of
the general education curriculum.
