Summer Camp Volunteers
MDA of New Hampshire

Posted:  2/5/13

MDA of New Hampshire is currently preparing for our 2013 summer camp session. Each year young people with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular diseases are given the opportunity to attend a week of MDA Summer Camp at one of some 90 sessions throughout the United States.  MDA is now recruiting volunteer counselors for the 2013 MDA Summer Camp, being held Sunday July 7th through Friday July 12th at Camp Allen in Bedford, NH.

Camp counselors must be committed to making this week an amazing and unforgettable experience for youngsters, age 6 to 17 years, with neuromuscular disease. MDA camp counselors work one-on-one with campers for the entire week, providing personal care and supervision, as well as companionship at a wide range of recreational and social activities. Training is provided.

This unique opportunity involves completing over 150 volunteer hours and is an excellent experience for men and women interested in the health care field – including rehabilitative medicine, social work, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and exercise science. Camp also gives counselors an opportunity to truly impact the lives of young people with neuromuscular diseases in a profound way.

If you’re 16 or older, you’re invited to apply and join the MDA team as a summer camp volunteer. At most MDA camps, volunteer counselors work one-on-one with campers, providing the around-the-clock care, close supervision and the attention that children with muscular dystrophy need. Counselors push wheelchairs, meet the daily needs of each child and become a youngster’s friend for a week. MDA especially is in need of male camp volunteers; however, female camp volunteers also are needed.

You can make a difference in the life of a child as a:
 • volunteer counselor;
 • volunteer medical staff;
 • volunteer activity/program coordinator;
 • volunteer camp planning committee member; and
 • volunteer water safety instructor

How to become a volunteer
 • Complete a volunteer application through your local MDA office.
 • Submit three letters of reference.
 • Consent to a criminal background check.
 • Interview with MDA staff.
