Come join us for a summer of work, kids, smiles, laughter and fun!!
WHAT IS KAMAJI??
Kamaji is a residential summer camp for girls located in Northern Minnesota – 220 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul and 12 miles east of Bemidji, Minnesota. Each summer, 150 girls (ages 7-14) and 80+ staff members come together to enjoy the magic of camping.
HOW WOULD CAMP KAMAJI DESCRIBE THE POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A NURSING ASSISTANT??
Camp Kamaji's Health Center, affectionately called Club Med, is a frenetic, chaotic, busy place with campers and staff passing in and out several times a day, seven days a week. We have two health "checks" each day: while the physician attends to the "ailments" campers and staff present with, the doctor totally relies on the nursing assistants to provide him/her with a profile of the campers and staff — a profile gleaned from their daily interaction out-and-about camp, getting to know everyone, and developing a keen sense of personalities, a well child vs. that same child being unwell, the daily nuances of camp and cabin life, what situations might have brought on a perceived illness/injury, whether same is physiological vs. psychological (meaning the camper may have had a disagreement with a camp friend or cabin counselor, may be feeling homesick, is typically hypochondriacal — all of which could contribute to an unhealthy feeling), etc. Additionally, the nursing assistant acts as a counselor-of-sorts with campers and staff who will likely seek her out for advice, as a sounding board, etc. Too, she would act a liaison between camp and the local health care providers should a child or staff member need to be seen in the ER or at the local clinic or dentist. She would also have the responsibility of being in touch with camper parents to let them know how their daughter is faring should that camper be unwell and admitted to Club Med. She would also be seen as a "mom" who tends to the health concerns of a sick camper—from taking her temp to providing juice and, under the on-site physician's directive, OTC meds, from reading bedtime stories to providing heaps of TLC. The nursing assistant would also assist the physician at all health calls and be on-call at Club Med in case of emergency.
Lastly, a Kamaji Nursing Assistant would never ever be asked to do anything that, under the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, can only be done under the direct supervision of an RN. She would never be allowed to act alone in any decision; she would not be called upon to make a medical decision although she could be asked for her input in terms of the camper/staff typical behavior, affect, etc. Still she must be competent, confident, able to see the "big picture" . . .
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS MUST A NURSING ASSISTANT HAVE TO APPLY??
