March 22 – April 23, 2010 Highly experimental in approach, these artists begin with a few basic assumptions about “book” and create objects that break out of pragmatic conventions and design precedents. The exhibition offers new insights and suggests boundless sculptural, illustrative, and textual possibilities for those bound pages that historically have enabled global literacy and initiated the information explosion. Bowden is a painter whose artist books, inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts, explore the notion of the sacred text. Susan Gaylord’s Spirit Books celebrate the natural world that can be seen and the invisible one that lies behind it. Leon Steinmetz, an illustrator of literary masterworks, makes the emotional content of the short story perform like theater on the pages of his limited edition books. May 2 – May 7, 2010 |
