A Hands-On Learning Experience Real World Experience with Mike Callahan

A real-world learning experience

Michael Callahan, Class of 2004

Internship opportunities are a win-win situation both for students and the companies they work with. Interns provide assistance in specific functional areas of business and they gain valuable experience they can highlight on their resumes. Rivier’s Michael Callahan, a graduate of the Class of 2004, was a finance intern at Brickmill Marketing Services in Nashua. Callahan found that the most difficult part of his internship experience also turned out to be the most rewarding—being expected to contribute right from day one.

“I thought they would give me busy work at first—asking me to make copies and coffee—but it wasn’t like that at all,” says Callahan. In addition to assisting with the company’s tax return and checking financial reports for the Board of Directors, Callahan worked extensively with Net Suite, a software package used by the finance industry.

Internships are just one component of Rivier’s hands-on learning experience. Business students also have the opportunity to work closely with the Nashua Regional Office of the Small Business Development Center, located on campus. “Our students work with the SBDC to help local businesses grow by providing marketing and advertising recommendations. It’s been a very rewarding partnership,” says Eric Drouart, associate professor of business administration.
