A master’s degree is an academic degree awarded for completion of additional study beyond the bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree programs typically call for 36-50 credits, and may also require a comprehensive exam, thesis, or portfolio to be submitted at the completion of the program.

A certificate gives working professionals an opportunity to increase their knowledge and expertise in a particular area of study. Certificate requirements vary by program; most range from 15-25 credits.
A Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study is awarded for completion of additional study in a particular field beyond the master’s degree. Most programs call for 32-46 credits.
Certification programs prepare candidates for state certification in various fields in education and counseling. Upon completion of a certification program, students are not automatically granted certification and may have to pass a licensing or certification examination administered by the state governing body for a particular field.
A doctoral degree is an academic degree awarded for completion of additional study beyond the master’s degree and successful defense of a dissertation at the completion of the program.
