Steps in the FAFSA Verification Process

Selected for Verification?  Here’s some information to help you through the process.

If your FAFSA has been selected for verification by the Department of Education or by our office, you must provide additional information before we can package and/or disburse your federal aid.   To complete the requirements for verification, please login to your NetPartner online financial aid account.  Under the Documents You Need to Complete tab, click on “Verification Required” and follow the steps below to create an account and provide any information requested.  It is very important that these steps are completed in a timely manner.  We cannot disburse federal aid and need-based institutional aid to your account until the verification process is completed.  We are here to assist you in any way we can to complete this process.  Contact us at (603) 897-8488, email us at SFS or come to our office for assistance.

Students – to create your verification account at  https://rivier.verifymyfafsa.com, click on “Create Account” in the lower blue bar.

Enter your email address and choose your username & password

Confirm student information:

  •  Date of birth:  mm/dd/yyyy
  •  Student ID:  <enter the last 4 digits of your social security number>
  •  Phone Number:  <enter your cell phone # -- we can send you updates via text>

When you have successfully logged in, click on the blue bar(s) and follow the instructions to enter the information requested.

Household Form – Items that potentially can be requested for verification:

Household Members – be sure to include all members living in the household, whether they are attending college or not.  Parent 1 should match Parent 1 on the FAFSA, etc.

Student Taxes & Parent Taxes – including filing status and choice of whether you have used or plan to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) in your FAFSA or Request a Tax Return Transcript(s).  Part of the verification process is to compare what you entered on your FAFSA matches what you listed on your taxes.  We highly encourage you to use the IRS DRT in your FAFSA if at all possible as this is the quickest way to retrieve and send us the information.  More information on using the IRS DRT can be found here.  Please note however you answer this question on the household form must match what you actually do.

Review & Sign – you can choose to electronically sign the verification worksheet (using the password you used when you created the verification account) or you can opt out of e-sign, download the form and sign it.  For dependent students, if you choose to e-sign, you must request a parent to e-sign the form as well.  This will show up on your list of tasks after you e-sign.  When you click on Request Parent E-Sign, you will choose which parent to send the e-sign request to and enter their email address.  Your parent will receive an email with a link to follow to create their parent account.  The parent must provide identifying information that matches what is on the FAFSA in order to successfully create their account.  Once they are logged in, they will review and e-sign the verification worksheet using the password they used to create their account.

Statement of Educational Purpose –download and bring this form to our office for us to verify identity; or you may have it notarized (including official notary seal) and upload it yourself.

Tasks to complete after signing the household form.

Based on the answers provided in the household form, you may see additional tasks to complete, including, but not limited to:

Student and/orParent use Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) in FAFSA:  login to your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov; Click on Make a FAFSA correction; click on the Student and/or Parent Financial Section.  As long as you have answered that your taxes are “Already completed” and your tax filing status is the same as your marital status on your FAFSA, you will see three questions:

  • Did you file a form 1040X amended tax return?
  • Did you file a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return?
  • Did you file your taxes electronically in the last 3 weeks (or by mail in the last 11 weeks)?

If you have answered “no” to all three questions, you will see a “Link to the IRS” blue button.  See the instructions at http://www.irsdataretrievaltool.com/irs-data-retrieval-tool-step-by-step-instructions

We do not recommend making any changes to the data that is transferred.

Be sure to sign and submit your FAFSA after you have successfully retrieved the prior year tax information.

Upload TaxTranscripts for Student and/or Parent:

To request a tax return transcript, go to www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

The information entered here must match exactly with what is on your tax return.  Be sure to request a “return transcript”, not an account transcript.  It takes about 5-10 business days to receive the tax return transcript.  You can either scan/upload to your verification account or you can send to us and we will upload for you.

Please note that we cannot accept your tax return.  It must be an official tax return transcript provided by the IRS.  If you just filed your taxes, it can take 2-3 weeks if you filed electronically before a tax transcript is available from the IRS.  If you filed your return via mail, it can take up to 11 weeks before your tax transcript would be available.

Upload Amended Tax Return 1040X:

If you indicated on your FAFSA that you submitted an amended tax return, then you will see this task on verification.  Please scan/upload the signed 1040X form or you can send to us and we will upload for you.  If you answered this question incorrectly on your FAFSA, then you will need to log into your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov, make a correction to the question “Did you amend your taxes?” to “no”.  This question can be found in the student and/or parent financial section.  You will then need to make some other change in your FAFSA before the system will allow you to sign/submit.  A slight change in the asset section or using the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to link your taxes from the IRS would allow you to then sign/submit your FAFSA.  You will then need to log back into your verification account and change the household form Student and/or Parent Tax section to indicate having used the DRT or providing tax return transcripts.  Please note however you answered for Student and Parent Taxes on the household form must match what you actually do.

Upload W-2s

If we need to verify income for a non-tax filer or amended returns, you will likely see this task on your verification account.  Please upload a copy of all employment W-2s for the tax year used on your FAFSA.  If you cannot locate your copies, you must request them from your employer.  You can also send the copies to us and we will upload for you.

Once all tasks are completed, be sure to click the blue “Submit” button and then click “Finished”.  This will send a notice to our office so that your financial aid counselor can begin review of your information/uploaded documents.  It can take anywhere from 1-2 weeks for our review to be complete assuming no other information is required.  Please note that during peak academic year periods, this may take longer.
