BackgroundJudith Stanford grew up in New England, and, as a young adult, spent time living in Europe (two years in Germany) and on the West Coast (California).  She returned to her hometown, Westford, Massachusetts, believing it was a great place to raise a family, and was fortunate enough to find a place on the faculty of nearby Rivier. For many years now, the Rivier community has seemed like a second family to her.

In addition to teaching courses for the English Department, she served as a writing consultant at the Writing Center and also founded and directed two programs that were very near and dear to her heart: “Adult Study Skills” (for students returning to college after many years away from school) and “Access,” (for traditional-age first-year students facing academic challenges). While she is officially “retired,” she continues to teach one or two classes per semester and has surprised herself by learning how to teach hybrid classes, which she greatly enjoys – especially the lively conversations on the “discussion board.”

Academic Philosophy“My approach to teaching focuses on the needs, aims, and goals of students.  As each new class begins, my hope is that everyone changes in positive ways (perhaps small, perhaps large) as a result of investing his/her time and money in the course. I would also hope for surprises for all of us and for the energy and good will to make those surprises beneficial and affirming.”
