I am passionate about teaching. Out of all my roles and responsibilities as a faculty member at Rivier, teaching has been my favorite part of the job. Fostering students’ excitement about the field of psychology and sparking that innate desire to learn are my two main objectives as an educator. From the first class, I work hard to create a supportive, collaborative and intellectually engaging atmosphere. Students know that while I expect a lot out of them, I also care about them as individuals. In addition to more traditional assigned readings and lectures, I utilize demonstrations, group exercises, discussions, case studies, real-world examples, debates, and Blackboard to promote learning. Students also take on more active roles through research presentations and by leading online or in-class discussions. As a result, students learn from each other and from the life experiences that they bring to class, creating a genuine respect for differing opinions.

In the Fall of 2011, the Depression Research Team was initiated in which I invited graduate students to take an active role in research through discussions of articles and research ideas, collection of data, and SPSS data entry. Currently, we are initiating two research projects examining vulnerability factors for depression and the prevalence of cyberbullying on college campuses. I hope in the future to incorporate undergraduate students into this lab.
