In the long-standing tradition of Catholic liberal arts education, the study of philosophy has always been regarded as central to the formation of the truly educated person. Thus, Rivier University includes a philosophy requirement as a central component of its liberal arts core curriculum, and also offers students a minor in philosophy.

Courses in the department invite students to participate in the philosophical quest for the purpose of human life, the essence of good community, and the ultimate nature of things. The study of philosophy also develops specific skills of mind and character, valuable in themselves, but also readily transferable and adaptable to a wide ranges of jobs and careers in business, industry, government, and the professions.

The department offers the option of a minor in philosophy and maintains strong ties with other departments in the University through specific course offerings relevant to those departments, such as Business Ethics, Computer Ethics, Philosophy of Art, Philosophy of Law, and Philosophy of Education.
