Launched in 2004, the Rivier University Writing Program is characterized by “writing-assisted” (W) courses in both general and major education. The program consists of four levels where writing instruction is targeted: the first-year seminars; 200-300-level general education courses; the capstone seminar; and a course in the major.
The Writing Program is founded on several principles:
- that all teachers should share responsibility for helping students become successful writers both inside and outside of the classroom;
- that writers benefit from learning to communicate in multiple contexts, composing in various forms, for various audiences;
- that writers achieve better thinking and communication through drafting and informal modes of writing;
- and that writers benefit from feedback from peers, tutors, and professors.
